Meet the Members
A new feature to our website and newsletter is the Meet the Members section. Our members will be taking it in turns to write a short profile about themselves and how they became involved in heavy horses.
First to take the challenge was committee member Karen White
"Although my family never owned a heavy horse my Gran had ponies and light horses so I've been around horses all my life. I started helping Derek Spanton with his shire, Jim at shows and working days when I was 13. Derek was a great encouragement and always took him to any young handler events for me, my love of heavy horses really grew from there. I was lucky enough to be able to make my hobby my career when I started working full time with Matt Bundock and the Banham Zoo horses, we were very fortunate to have all four breeds of heavy horse at the zoo but the Suffolk Horse soon became my favourite. I learnt a great deal from Matt and can still call on his expertise from time to time. I am now self employed and work mostly as a shoe groom for Jayne Groom. We show 3 Suffolk's 2 of which I broke to drive and a youngster who is just starting out in his driven career. We also attend steam rallies and other demonstrations plus working days, and have had a go at ploughing which is something I've always wanted to do. we hope to show a single and a pair in the trade turnout classes this year and will take Charlie to some quieter events to continue his education. I would encourage any younger members to get involved with a horse owner, you will learn many new skills, make lots of friends and could find a lifelong career."
